SIGNIFICANT WEATHER

  • Southwest monsoon was vigorous over Telangana, Marathawada and Gujarat State for one or two days of the week.
  • Southwest monsoon was active over Vidarbha for many days; over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and North Interior Karnataka for a few days and over Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Odisha, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat State, Marathawada, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka for one or two days of the week.

METEOROLOGICAL ANALYSIS

  • Last week’s low pressure area lay over Odisha & adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal on 11th July, associated upper air cyclonic circulation extending upto mid-tropospheric levels. The system moved over Chhattisgarh and adjoining Jharkhand on 12th July, over West Madhya Pradesh & neighbourhood on 13th July and over West Rajasthan and adjoining Pakistan on 14th July where it merged with monsoon trough.
  • An upper air cyclonic circulation lay over northwest Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal & Odisha on 14th July between 3.1 to 5.8 Km above mean sea level. Under its influence a low pressure area formed on 15th July over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal & Odisha and persisted on 16th July. The low pressure area lay over East Madhya Pradesh & adjoining Chhattisgarh on 17th July associated upper air cyclonic circulation extending upto mid-tropospheric level tilting southwards with height.
  • Another upper air cyclonic circulation lay over East Madhya Pradesh & neighbourhood on 14th July extending upto 2.1 Km above mean sea level and persisted on 15th & 16th July.
  • The axis of monsoon trough ran near its normal position on 11th July, south of its normal position on 12th & 13th July. Western end of monsoon trough ran near its normal position and eastern end of monsoon trough ran south of its normal position during 14th to 17th July.
  • The off-shore trough mainly ran from south Gujarat coast to Kerala coast during most days of the week.
  • The western disturbance as an upper air system lay over north Pakistan & adjoining Jammu & Kashmir on 16th July and moved away eastwards on 17th July.

RAINFALL

  • Widespread rainfall occurred over Konkan & Goa, Coastal Karnataka and Kerala for most days; over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Marathawada and Vidarbha for many days; over Gujarat Region, Madhya Maharashtra, Telangana and North Interior Karnataka for a few days and over Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal & Sikkim, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra & Kutch, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Lakshadweep for one or two days of the week.
  • Fairly widespread rainfall occurred over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Uttarakhand and West Madhya Pradesh for many days; over Himachal Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra & Kutch, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Lakshadweep for a few days and over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat Region, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada, Vidarbha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and interior Karnataka for one or two days of the week.
  • Scattered rainfall occurred over Odisha, East Rajasthan and South Interior Karnataka for many days; over Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Madhya Maharashtra, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema for a few days and over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, West Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat State, Marathawada, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and North Interior Karnataka for one or two days of the week.
  • Isolated rainfall occurred over Tamil Nadu & Puducherry for most days; over Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and West Rajasthan for many days; over Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh and Rayalaseema for a few days and over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, East Rajasthan, Gujarat State, Marathawada, Vidarbha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, North Interior Karnataka and Lakshadweep for one or two days of the week.
  • Mainly dry weather prevailed over Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Rayalaseema and Lakshadweep for one or two days of the week.

Rainfall During The Week (For the week ending on 17th July, 2013)


Rainfall was excess/normal in 21 and deficient/scanty in 15 out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions. (All India Actual: 66.6 mm, Normal: 66.6 mm and Departure: 0%).

Rainfall was excess/normal in 30 and deficient/scanty in 6Outlook For The Week Ending on 24th July, 2013 out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions. (All India Actual: 367.8 mm, Normal: 318.1 mm and Departure: +16%).
The sub-division wise weekly and seasonal rainfall distribution is presented in Fig.1 and Fig.2.

Statewise distribution of number of districts with excess, normal, deficient, scanty and no rainfall is shown in Table-2.

A comparative data of cumulative seasonal rainfall during the corresponding period in the last five years is given in Table-3.

Outlook For The Week Ending on 24th July, 2013

  • Rain/thundershowers would occur at most places along west coast during many days of the week.
  • Rain/thundershowers would occur at many places over western Himalayan region and east & northeast India during many days of the week.
  • Rain/thundershowers would occur at many places over central India during 1st half of the week and decrease thereafter.
  • Rain/thundershowers would occur at a few places over Gangetic plains during 1st two days of the week and increase thereafter.
  • Subdued rainfall activity over rest parts of the country.
