WEATHER DURING THE WEEK ENDING ON

10 JULY, 2013


SIGNIFICANT WEATHER

  • Southwest monsoon was vigorous over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat region and South Interior Karnataka for one or two days of the week.
  • Southwest monsoon was active over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim for many days; over Himachal Pradesh, Coastal Karnataka and Kerala for a few days and over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, East Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and North Interior Karnataka for one or two days of the week.

METEOROLOGICAL ANALYSIS

  • Last week’s well marked low pressure area lay over West Madhya Pradesh and neighbourhood on 4th July associated upper air cyclonic circulation extending upto mid-tropospheric level and seen as a cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and adjoining area of Kutch on 5th July between 3.1 to 5.8 Km above mean sea level and became less marked on 6th July 2013.
  • An upper air cyclonic circulation lay over westcentral Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood on 6th July between 3.1 to 5.8 Km above mean sea level, persisted over the same area on 7th extending upto Mid-tropospheric level, over westcentral Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast & north Coastal Andhra Pradesh on 8th and over south Odisha & neighbourhood on 9th July. Under its influence a low pressure area was formed over Odisha & adjoining areas of northwest Bay of Bengal on 10th July associated cyclonic circulation extending upto mid-tropospheric level tilting southwestwards with height.
  • Axis of monsoon trough ran south of its normal position on 4th & 7th July. It ran slightly north of its normal position on 6th, 8th & 9th July. However, there were two branches of trough on 8th & 9th July ran towards northeastern states and another branch south of its normal position. The western end of the trough ran south of its normal position and eastern end north of its normal position on 5th July.
  • The off-shore trough mainly ran Gujarat coast to Kerala coast during 3rd to 6th July and from Gujarat coast to north Kerala coast during 7th to 10th July.
  • The western disturbance as a trough in westerlies in mid-tropospheric levels lay over north Pakistan & adjoining areas of Jammu & Kashmir on 4th July, persisted over the same area on 5th & 6th July, over Jammu & Kashmir and neighbourhood on 7th, persisted over the same area on 8th & 9th July and it moved away eastwards on 10th July.

RAINFALL

  • Widespread rainfall occurred over Arunachal Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Konkan & Goa, Coastal Karnataka and Kerala for most days; over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Uttarakhand and Kerala for a few days and over Assam & Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat Region, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathawada for one or two days of the week.
  • Fairly widespread rainfall occurred over Assam & Meghalaya for many days; over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, East Rajasthan and Telangana for a few days and over Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat State, Marathawada, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu & Puducherry and interior Karnataka for one or two days of the week.
  • Scattered rainfall occurred over South Interior Karnataka for most days; over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, West Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat State, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada, Vidarbha and Andhra Pradesh for many days; over Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and North Interior Karnataka for a few days and over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Assam & Meghalaya, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, West Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh and Lakshadweep for one or two days of the week.
  • Isolated rainfall occurred over Gangetic West Bengal, West Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu & Puducherry for most days; over Odisha, Jharkhand, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and Rayalaseema for many days; over West Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and North Interior Karnataka for a few days and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Saurashtra & Kutch, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada, Vidarbha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Lakshadweep for one or two days of the week.

Sub-divisionwise daily distribution of rainfall is shown in Table-1.

Rainfall During The Week (For the week ending on 10th July, 2013)


Rainfall was excess/normal in 26 and deficient/scanty in 10 out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions. (All India Actual: 59.3 mm, Normal: 62.4 mm and Departure: -5%).

Cumulative Seasonal Rainfall (1st June to 10th July, 2013)

Rainfall was excess/normal in 31 and deficient/scanty in 5 out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions. (All India Actual: 298.7 mm, Normal: 251.6 mm and Departure: +19%).
The sub-division wise weekly and seasonal rainfall distribution is presented in Fig.1 and Fig.2.

Statewise distribution of number of districts with excess, normal, deficient, scanty and no rainfall is shown in Table-2.

A comparative data of cumulative seasonal rainfall during the corresponding period in the last five years is given in Table-3.

Outlook For The Week Ending on 17th July, 2013

  • Rain/thundershowers would occur at most places along west coast and over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Assam & Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh for many days of the week.
  • Rain/thundershowers would occur at many places over Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, interior Maharashtra, Gujarat region and East Rajasthan for many days of the week.
  • Rain/thundershowers would occur at many places over Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura for a few days of the week.
  • Rain/thundershowers would occur at a few places over rest parts of the country except Tamil Nadu, West Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir where rainfall may be isolated.
