WEATHER DURING THE WEEK ENDING ON

3 JULY, 2013


SIGNIFICANT WEATHER

  • Southwest monsoon was vigorous over East Uttar Pradesh for a few days and over Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Coastal & South Interior Karnataka and Marathawada for one or two days of the week.
  • Southwest monsoon was active over East Uttar Pradesh for many days; over Arunachal Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh for a few days and over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, West Bengal & Sikkim, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Konkan & Goa, Vidarbha, Telangana, Coastal & South Interior Karnataka and Kerala for one or two days of the week.

METEOROLOGICAL ANALYSIS

  • Last week’s well marked low pressure area lay over southeast Uttar Pradesh & neighbourhood on 27th June as a low pressure area with associated cyclonic circulation extending upto mid-tropospheric level. The low pressure area lay over East Uttar Pradesh and adjoining area of Bihar on 28th and remained practically stationary over the same area on 29th and 30th, over southeast Uttar Pradesh and neighbourhood on 1st July, over northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining area of Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh on 2nd July. The low pressure area intensified into a well marked low pressure area on 3rd July and lay over northwest Madhya Pradesh and neighbourhood associated cyclonic circulation extending upto mid-tropospheric level.
  • The off-shore trough ran from south Gujarat coast to Kerala coast during the week.
  • Axis of monsoon trough on mean sea level passed nearly normal position during 27th to 29th June and south of its normal position during 2nd & 3rd July. The western end of monsoon trough ran close to foot hills of the Himalayas and eastern end north of its normal position on 30th June and 1st July.
  • A western disturbance as a trough in mid-tropospheric westerlies ran along 62.00E and north of 30.00N on 1st July, along 65.00E and north of 30.00N on 2nd July and along 70.00E and north of 30.00N on 3rd July.

RAINFALL

  • Widespread rainfall occurred over Konkan & Goa and Coastal Karnataka for most days; over Arunachal Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, East Madhya Pradesh and Kerala for many days and over Assam & Meghalaya, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, West Madhya Pradesh, Marathawada, Vidarbha and Lakshadweep for one or two days of the week.
  • Fairly widespread rainfall occurred over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura for most days; over Andaman & Nicobar Islands and East Madhya Pradesh for many days; over Assam & Meghalaya, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Lakshadweep for a few days and over Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal & Sikkim, Jharkhand, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Telangana, Coastal and South Interior Karnataka for one or two days of the week.
  • Scattered rainfall occurred over Madhya Maharashtra for most days; over Odisha, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and south Interior Karnataka for many days; over Assam & Meghalaya, West Uttar Pradesh and North Interior Karnataka for a few days and over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, West Bengal & Sikkim, Bihar, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat State, Marathawada, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Kerala and Lakshadweep for one or two days of the week.
  • Isolated rainfall occurred over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu & Puducherry for most days; over Gangetic West Bengal, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat State, Vidarbha, Telangana and North Interior Karnataka for many days; over Marathawada for a few days and over Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, West Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and South Interior Karnataka for one or two days of the week.

Sub-divisionwise daily distribution of rainfall is shown in Table-1.

Rainfall During The Week (For the week ending on 3rd July, 2013)


Rainfall was excess/normal in 18 and deficient/scanty in 18 out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions. (All India Actual: 59.1 mm, Normal: 57.1 mm and Departure: +3%).

Cumulative Seasonal Rainfall (1st June to 3rd July, 2013)

Rainfall was excess/normal in 32 and deficient/scanty in 4 out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions. (All India Actual: 239.7 mm, Normal: 189.2 mm and Departure: +27%).
The sub-division wise weekly and seasonal rainfall distribution is presented in Fig.1 and Fig.2.

Statewise distribution of number of districts with excess, normal, deficient, scanty and no rainfall is shown in Table-2.

A comparative data of cumulative seasonal rainfall during the corresponding period in the last five years is given in Table-3.

Outlook For The Week Ending on 10th July, 2013

  • Rain/thundershowers would occur at most places over Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, northeastern states and along west coast during many days of the week with heavy to very heavy falls.
  • Rain/thundershowers would occur at many places over Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, East Rajasthan during 1st half of the week and decrease thereafter and over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi during 2nd half of the week.
  • Rain/thundershowers would occur at a few places over remaining parts of the country except south peninsular India and West Rajasthan where rainfall would be subdued.
