Southwest monsoon was active over Chhattisgarh for many days; over Odisha, Jharkhand, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Coastal Karnataka for a few days and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, West Bengal & Sikkim, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat Region, Konkan & Goa, Marathawada, Vidarbha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and North Interior Karnataka for one or two days of the week.

METEOROLOGICAL ANALYSIS


Last week’s upper air circulation over northeast Rajasthan & neighbourhood extended upto 2.1 km above mean sea level laid over northwest Rajasthan & neighbourhood on 15 August, over Haryana & neighbourhood extended upto 3.1 km on 16 August and persisted over the same area on 17 August. It laid over Haryana & adjoining Punjab on 18 August, over Punjab & neighbourhood on 19 August and became less marked on 20 August.
The axis of monsoon trough oscillated north-south of its normal position during the week


Last week’s upper air cyclonic circulation over westcentral Bay of Bengal off coastal Andhra Pradesh & south Odisha extended upto mid-tropospheric levels persisted over the same area on 15 August. Under its influence, a low pressure area formed over west central & adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off south coastal Odisha and north coastal Andhra Pradesh on 16 August and merged with monsoon trough on 17 August.


Another upper air cyclonic circulation laid over north Chhattisgarh & neighbourhood extended upto 1.5 Km above mean sea level on 16 August and laid over east Uttar Pradesh & neighbourhood on 17 August. Under its influence, a low pressure area formed over east Uttar Pradesh & adjoining north Madhya Pradesh with associated cyclonic circulation extended upto 3.1 Km on 18 August and merged with monsoon trough on 19 August.


Another fresh low pressure area formed over north Bay of Bengal & adjoining areas of Gangetic West Bengal with associated upper air cyclonic circulation extended upto mid-tropospheric levels on 18 August and became well marked on 19 August. It concentrated into depression over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining area of northwest Bay of Bengal, north Odisha & Jharkhand on 20 August and laid over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas of Jharkhand & north Odisha on 21 August


During the week, two western Disturbance as trough in mid-tropospheric levels affected the Western Himalayan region and adjoining plains.
RAINFALL
Widespread rainfall occurred over Coastal Karnataka for most days; over Konkan & Goa for many days; over Gangetic West Bengal, East Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Telangana for a few days and over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Odisha, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, West Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat Region, Vidarbha, Rayalaseema and interior Karnataka for one or two days of the week.



Fairly widespread rainfall occurred over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, East Uttar Pradesh and Kerala for many days; over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and Chhattisgarh for a few days and over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Assam & Meghalaya, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, West Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat State, Konkan & Goa, Marathawada, Vidarbha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu & Puducherry, Karnataka and Lakshadweep for one or two days of the week.



Scattered rainfall occurred over Assam & Meghalaya, Bihar, East Rajasthan, Madhya Maharashtra and South Interior Karnataka for many days; over Arunachal Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, North Interior Karnataka and Kerala for a few days and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Gangetic West Bengal,
Odisha, Jharkhand, Punjab, West Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat State, Vidarbha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu & Puducherry and Lakshadweep for one or two days of the week
Isolated rainfall occurred over Marathawada for most days; over Tamilnadu & Puducherry for many days; over Arunachal Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, West Rajasthan, Gujarat Region, Madhya Maharashtra and Rayalaseema for a few days and over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Assam & Meghalaya, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, West Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra & Kutch, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and North Interior Karnataka for one or two days of the week.
Mainly dry weather prevailed over Lakshadweep for most days of the week.
Rainfall was excess/normal in 26 and deficient/scanty in 10 out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions. (All India Actual: 74.0 mm, Normal: 58.5 mm and Departure: +26%).

Cumulative Seasonal Rainfall (1st June to 21st August, 2013)


Rainfall was excess/normal in 31 and deficient in 5 out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions. (All India Actual: 728.8 mm, Normal: 638.4 mm and Departure: +14%).

The sub-division wise weekly and seasonal rainfall distribution is presented in Fig.1 and Fig.2.
Statewise distribution of number of districts with excess, normal, deficient, scanty and no rainfall is shown in Table-2.

A comparative data of cumulative seasonal rainfall during the corresponding period in the last five years is given in Table-3.

SYNOPTIC FEATURES AS ON 22 AUGUST, 2013
CURRENT

The depression lies over east Madhya Pradesh, about 50 Km east-southeast of Jabalpur at 1130 hours IST of 22nd August, 2013.

The western end of monsoon trough is north of its normal and eastern end is near its normal position.

A western disturbance as an upper air cyclonic circulation in mid-tropospheric westerlies lies over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu & Kashmir.

PREDICTE

The Depression would move west-northwestwards and weaken gradually into a well marked low pressure area during next 12 hours.

Outlook For The Week Ending on 28th August, 20

Rain/thundershowers would occur at many places along west coast and Andaman & Nicobar Islands during on many days of the week.

Rain/thundershowers would occur at many places over central India during 1st half of the week and decrease thereafter.

Rain/thundershowers would occur at a few places over east & northeast India during 1st half of the week and increase thereafter.

Rain/thundershowers would occur at a few places over northwest India during the week.

Subdued rainfall activity over rest of the country during the week.
