WEATHER DURING THE WEEK ENDING ON

31 JULY, 2013

Southwest monsoon was vigorous over Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Saurashtra, Kutch & Diu, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh for one or two days of the week.

Southwest monsoon was active over Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat Region, Madhya Maharashtra and Coastal Karnataka for many days; over Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, East Rajasthan for a few days and over Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Saurashtra, Kutch & Diu, Konkan & Goa, Marathawada, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, South Interior Karnataka and Kerala for one or two days of the week.

METEOROLOGICAL ANALYSIS


Last week’s low pressure area over West Madhya Pradesh & neighbourhood laid over north Madhya Pradesh & adjoining southeast Rajasthan on 25th July and merged with monsoon trough on 26th July. Its associated upper air cyclonic circulation laid over north Madhya Pradesh & adjoining Rajasthan extended upto mid-tropospheric levels on 27th July. It moved over to east Rajasthan & adjoining areas Haryana on 28th July and over north Rajasthan and adjoining areas of Punjab & Haryana in lower levels on 29th & 30th July and become less marked on 31st July.

Another low pressure area formed over northwest Bay of Bengal & adjoining coastal West Bengal on 25th July. It became well marked and laid over Gangetic West Bengal & neighbourhood on 26th July. It laid over Jharkhand & adjoining Bihar on 27th July. It weakened into low pressure area and laid over east Uttar Pradesh & adjoining area of northeast Madhya Pradesh on 28th July. It laid over central Uttar Pradesh & adjoining areas of Madhya Pradesh on 29th July and merged with monsoon trough on 30th July.


Another fresh low pressure area formed over north Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of angladesh & Gangetic West Bengal on 29th July. It concentrated into depression over same area on 30th July morning and crossed north Odisha & adjoining west Bengal coast between Digha and Balasore around 1230 Hours IST of 30th July. It moved westward and laid over over north Chhattisgarh & neighbourhood, close to south of Pendra and about 200 Km southeast of Jabalpur on 31st July.

An upper air cyclonic circulation laid over Haryana and adjoining areas of Punjab and north Rajasthan at lower levels during 1st half of the week.

The axis of monsoon trough was near its normal position during 1st half of the week and its western end was north of its normal position during 2nd half of the week.

The off-shore trough ran from Gujarat coast to Kerala coast during the week.

rAINFALL

Widespread rainfall occurred over Konkan & Goa and Coastal Andhra Pradesh for most days; over Gangetic West Bengal, East Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat Region and Kerala for many days; over Odisha, West Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh for a few days and over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, West Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Saurashtra & Kutch and Vidarbha for one or two days of the week.

Fairly widespread rainfall occurred over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, East Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Madhya Maharashtra for many days; over Odisha and Lakshadweep for a few days and over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, West Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat region, Saurashtra & Kutch, Marathawada, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, South Interior Karnataka and Kerala for one or two days of the week.

Scattered rainfall occurred over North Interior Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka for many days; over Himachal Pradesh, Saurashtra & Kutch and Madhya Maharashtra for a few days and over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, East Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat region, Marathawada, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Kerala and Lakshadweep for one or two days of the week.


Isolated rainfall occurred over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu for most days; over Bihar, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, West Rajasthan, Marathawada and Telangana for many days; over East Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir and over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Vidarbha, North Interior Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka and Kerala for one or two days of the week.

Dry/Mainly dry weather prevailed over Lakshadweep, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Marathawada and Rayalaseema for one or two days of the week.

Rainfall was excess/normal in 18 and deficient/scanty in 18 out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions. (All India Actual: 78.1 mm, Normal: 66.6 mm and Departure: +17%).

fall was excess/normal in 30 and deficient/scanty in 6 out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions. (All India Actual: 528.1 mm, Normal: 452.4 mm and Departure: +17%).


Rain/thundershowers would occur at most places along west coast during 1st half of the week and at many places thereafter.

Rain/thundershowers would also occur at most places over east Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, interior Maharashtra and Gujarat during next 48 hours and decrease considerably thereafter.

Rain/thundershowers would occur at many places over western Himalayan region, northeastern states, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep during the week.

Rain/thundershowers would occur at a few places over Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and east India during 1st half of the week and at many places thereafter.

Rain/thundershowers would occur at a few places over remaining parts of the country outside Rayalaseema and Tamilnadu, where it would occur at isolated places.
