WEATHER DURING THE WEEK ENDING ON

14 AUGUST, 2013

outhwest monsoon was vigorous over Jammu & Kashmir, West Rajasthan and Gujarat Region for one or two days of the week.

Southwest monsoon was active over East Rajasthan for many days; over East Madhya Pradesh for a few days and over Andaman& Nicobar Islands, Assam & Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, West Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, Marathawada, Vidarbha, Telangana and North Interior Karnataka for one or two days of the week.

METEOROLOGICAL ANALYSIS

 
Last week’s low pressure area over Jharkhand & neighbourhood merged with monsoon trough on 8 August, however, its associated upper air cyclonic circulation laid over Bihar & neighbourhood extended upto mid-tropospheric levels. Under its influence, a low pressure area formed over northeast Madhya Pradesh & neighbourhood on 9 August, it laid over central parts of Uttar Pradesh & adjoining northeast Madhya Pradesh on 10 August, over west Uttar Pradesh & adjoining east Rajasthan on 11 August and merged with monsoon trough on 12 August & its associated upper air circulation laid over northeast Rajasthan & neighbourhood extended upto 2.1 km. It persisted over same area on 13 August and over central parts of Rajasthan & neighbourhood on 14 August.

The axis of monsoon trough oscillated north-south of its normal position during the week.

An upper air cyclonic circulation laid over Haryana & neighbourhood at lower levels on 8 August, it laid over west Uttar Pradesh & adjoining Haryana on 9 August and become less marked thereafter.

An upper air cyclonic circulation laid over central parts of south Bay of Bengal between 2.1 to 5.8 km above mean sea level on 10 August and over northwest & adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood extended upto mid tropospheric levels on 11 August. It laid over westcentral Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood between 3.1 Km to 5.8 Km above mean sea level on 12 August, over westcentral Bay of Bengal off coastal Andhra Pradesh extended upto mid tropospheric levels on 13 August and over westcentral Bay of Bengal off coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha extended upto mid tropospheric levels tilting southwards with height on 14 August.

Another upper air cyclonic circulation laid over Assam & neighbourhood between 1.5 km to 4.5 km above mean sea level on 14 August.

A western Disturbance as trough in mid tropospheric levels westerlies laid over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu & Kashmir on 11 August, over Jammu & Kashmir and neighbourhood on 12 August and moved eastward on 13 August. Another western Disturbance as trough in mid tropospheric levels westerlies laid over north Pakistan & neighbourhood on 13 August and over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu & Kashmir on 14 August.

RAINFALL

Widespread rainfall occurred over Konkan & Goa and Coastal Karnataka for most days; over Andaman & Nicobar Islands for many days; over East Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat Region for a few days and over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Gangetic West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, East Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, Marathawada, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh for one or two days of the week.

Fairly widespread rainfall occurred over, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, East Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh and Kerala for many days; over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and Odisha for a few days and over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, West Rajasthan, Saurashtra & Kutch, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Coastal Karnataka and North Interior Karnataka for one or two days of the week.

Scattered rainfall occurred over Odisha, Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Saurashtra & Kutch, Madhya Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Tamilnadu & Puducherry and South Interior Karnataka for many days; over East Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat Region, Vidarbha and Rayalaseema for a few days and over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, West Rajasthan, East Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, Marathawada, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Lakshadweep for one or two days of the week.



Isolated rainfall occurred over Punjab and North Interior Karnataka for most days; over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, West Rajasthan, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Rayalaseema for many days; over Gangetic West Bengal and Marathawada for a few days and over Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Jharkhand, Bihar, West Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra & Kutch, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and South Interior Karnataka for one or two days of the week.

Mainly dry weather prevailed over Lakshadweep for most days of the week.

Rainfall During The Week (For the week ending on 14th August, 2013)
ll was excess/normal in 17 and deficient/scanty in 19 out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions. (All India Actual: 60.3 mm, Normal: 62.6 mm and Departure: - 4 %).

seasonal Rainfall (1st June to 14th August, 2013)

Rainfall was excess/normal in 30 and deficient/scanty in 6 out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions. (All India Actual: 654.3 mm, Normal: 579.9 mm and Departure: +13%).

sub-division wise weekly and seasonal rainfall distribution is presented in Fig.1 and Fig.2.

Statewise distribution of number of districts with excess, normal, deficient, scanty and no rainfall is shown in Table-2.

A comparative data of cumulative seasonal rainfall during the corresponding period in the last five years is given in Table-3.

 
SYNOPTIC FEATURES AS ON 15 AUGUST, 2013

CURRENT

An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Rajasthan and neighbourhood extends upto 2.1 km above mean sea level.
The axis of monsoon trough is south of its normal position.

An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over westcentral Bay of Bengal off Andhra Pradesh & south Odisha coasts extending upto mid-tropospheric levels tilting southwards with height.

The western disturbance as a trough in mid-tropospheric westerlies lies over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu & Kashmir.



An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over Assam and neighbourhood in lower levels.









PREDICTED



The western end of monsoon trough would shift north of its normal position during many days of the week.



A low pressure may form over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal around 17 August.

Outlook For The Week Ending on 21st August, 2013

Rain/thundershowers would occur at many places over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and northeastern states during many days of the week.

Rain/thundershowers would occur at many places over Jammu & Kashmir during 1st half of the week and at few places thereafter.

Rain/thundershowers would also occur at many places over west coast, east Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha during many days of the week.

Rain/thundershowers would occur at most places over Andhra Pradesh & at many places over nort

Tamilnadu during next 2 days and at a few places for subsequent days of the week.



Rain/thundershowers would occur at a few places over rest parts of the country outside Marathawada, north interior Karnataka and south Tamilnadu, where, it would be isolated.
