WEATHER DURING THE WEEK ENDING ON

19th JUNE, 2013


SIGNIFICANT WEATHER

  • Southwest monsoon has further advanced over remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and entire Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and Punjab and thus covered entire country on 16th June 2013.
  • Southwest monsoon was vigorous over East Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat state, Vidarbha for a few days and over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Odisha, West Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, West Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and South Interior Karnataka for one or two days of the week.
  • Southwest monsoon was active over Konkan & Goa for most days, over Madhya Maharashtra and Kerala for many days, over Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Gangetic West Bengal for a few days and over Odisha, Jharkhand, Marathawada, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and Coastal Karnataka for one or two days of the week.

METEOROLOGICAL ANALYSIS

  • Last week’s cyclonic circulation over Gujarat lay over southeast Pakistan and adjoining areas of Kutch on 13th June in lower level, over northwest Rajasthan on 14th, persisted over same area on 15th and became less marked on 16th June 2013.
  • Last week’s low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal moved over Odisha on 13th June and intensified into a well marked low pressure area associated cyclonic circulation extending upto mid-tropospheric level, over Chhattisgarh on 14th, over southeast Madhya Pradesh and neighbourhood on 15th and lay over West Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas of East Rajasthan as a low pressure area on 16th June associated cyclonic circulation extending upto mid-tropospheric level, over northeast Rajasthan and adjoining areas of Haryana on 17th June. The low pressure area weakened into cyclonic circulation over Haryana and neighbourhood on 18th extending upto 2.1 km above mean sea level and became less marked on 19th June 2013.
  • The trough of low pressure on mean sea level ran from southwest Rajasthan to eastcentral Bay of Bengal on 13th June across Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and centre of well marked low pressure area ran from northwest Rajasthan to eastcentral Bay of Bengal on 14th June across Madhya Pradesh & centre of low pressure, from northwest Rajasthan to eastcentral Bay of Bengal across Madhya Pradesh & centre of low pressure area on 15th June 2013.
  • Axis of monsoon trough on mea sea level ran south of its normal position on 16th. The western end of the trough was south and eastern end north of its normal position on 17th to 19th June 2013.
  • The off-shore trough ran from Gujarat coast to Kerala coast on 13th and persisted over the same area during the week with embedded vortex off Konkan coast during 16th & 17th June 2013.
  • A western disturbance as a trough in westerlies in mid tropospheric level lay along Long. 73.0°E and north of Lat. 30.0°N on13th June 2013 and moved away eastwards on 14th June 2013.
  • A western disturbance as a trough in westerlies in mid tropospheric level lay along Long. 70.0°E and north of Lat. 25.0°N on16th, along Long. 74.0°E and north of Lat. 25.0°N on 17th, along Long. 75.0°E and north of Lat. 30.0°N on 18th June 2013 and moved away eastwards on 19th June 2013.
  • An upper air cyclonic circulation lay over eastcentral Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of Andaman Sea on 18th between 3.1 to 5.8 Km above mean sea level and persisted over the same area on 19th June 2013.


RAINFALL

  • Widespread rainfall occurred over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Konkan & Goa, Coastal Karnataka and Kerala for most days; over Himachal Pradesh for many days; over Uttarakhand, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and Lakshadweep for a few days and over Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Saurashtra & Kutch, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada and Telangana for one or two days of the week.
  • Fairly widespread rainfall occurred over Gangetic West Bengal, West Madhya Pradesh and Madhya Maharashtra for many days; over Jammu & Kashmir and Lakshadweep for a few days and over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Odisha, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, East Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat State, Marathawada, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and South Interior Karnataka for one or two days of the week.
  • Scattered rainfall occurred over East Rajasthan for most days; over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Bihar, West Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh and South Interior Karnataka for many days; over Arunachal Pradesh for a few days and over Assam & Meghalaya, Odisha, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat State, Marathawada, Vidarbha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, North Interior Karnataka and Lakshadweep for one or two days of the week.
  • Isolated rainfall occurred over Telangana for most days; over West Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and North Interior Karnataka for many days; over Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, West Rajasthan and Marathawada for a few days and over Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, East Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat State, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and South Interior Karnataka for one or two days of the week.

Sub-divisionwise daily distribution of rainfall is shown in Table-1.

Rainfall During The Week (For the week ending on 19th June, 2013)


Rainfall was excess/normal in 29 and deficient/scanty in 7 out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions. (All India Actual: 73.5 mm, Normal: 38.9 mm and Departure: +89%).

Cumulative Seasonal Rainfall (1st June to 19th June, 2013)

Rainfall was excess/normal in 32 and deficient/scanty in 4 out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions. (All India Actual: 130.7 mm, Normal: 84.7 mm and Departure: +54%).
The sub-division wise weekly and seasonal rainfall distribution is presented in Fig.2 and Fig.3.

Statewise distribution of number of districts with excess, normal, deficient, scanty and no rainfall is shown in Table-2.

A comparative data of cumulative seasonal rainfall during the corresponding period in the last five years is given in Table-3.

Outlook For The Week Ending on 26th June, 2013

  • Rain/thundershowers would occur at many places along west coast, Lakshadweep, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Odisha, West Bengal & Sikkim and northeastern states on many days of the week.
  • Rain/thundershowers would occur at few places over Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and interior Karnataka during 1st half of the week and increase in the 2nd half.
  • Rain/thundershowers would occur at few places over south peninsular India. Increase in rainfall activity over western Himalayan region during 2nd half of the week.
  • Rain/thundershowers would occur at one or two places over remaining parts of the country.
